Anambra Government Declares Masquerade Wanted for Fatal Assault on Elderly Man

the Anambra State government has declared a 19-year-old man named Ifechukwu Nweke wanted for the alleged murder of 71-year-old Shedrack Okoye. The incident occurred in Umuawulu community, Awka South Local Government Area, on December 26, 2023, during a masquerade performance.

Nweke is accused of assaulting Okoye, resulting in his tragic death, after the elderly man refused to give him money while he was accompanied by a friend. This act is considered a serious violation of the state’s law on masquerading, enacted in 2022, emphasizing the importance of ensuring cultural practices do not lead to harm or obstruction of individuals.

The State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, highlighted the gravity of the offense, emphasizing that masquerading should be for entertainment purposes and should not endanger lives or impede people’s movements.

The family of the deceased, grieving and seeking justice, expressed dissatisfaction with the response from both the Umuawulu community and the authorities. Efforts by the traditional ruler of Umuawulu, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, to mediate between the two families and facilitate a proper burial for the deceased have been initiated. However, financial constraints are impeding swift resolution.

This tragic incident underscores the importance of effective law enforcement and community engagement to promptly address such crimes. The collaboration of law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and concerned citizens is crucial to bringing the perpetrator to justice and offering solace to the grieving family.
