Former Football Star Dani Alves Found Guilty of Nightclub Rape, Receives Prison Sentence

In a Spanish court ruling, former Barcelona and Brazil footballer Dani Alves has been convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub. The 40-year-old, known as one of the most decorated footballers in history, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison. The court also ordered an additional five years of probation for Alves.

The incident, which took place in the early hours of December 31, 2022, saw Alves vehemently deny the accusations. Despite his lawyer’s request for acquittal, the court found him guilty. The prosecution had sought a nine-year prison term, but the court opted for a sentence of four and a half years.

The verdict acknowledged Alves’s decision to pay €150,000 (£128,500) in damages to the victim, irrespective of the trial’s outcome. The court, however, rejected the argument that Alves should receive a more lenient sentence due to intoxication.

While Alves’s lawyer plans to appeal the decision, a lawyer for the victim welcomed the verdict, emphasizing that it recognizes the truth told by the victim and the associated suffering. In Spain, allegations of rape fall under the broader category of sexual assault, with potential sentences ranging from four to 15 years in prison.
