Germany’s Scholz Issues Warning Against Neo-Nazi Networks on Holocaust Memorial Day

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed deep concerns about the resurgence of far-right extremism, particularly highlighting the threat posed by “neo-Nazis and their dark networks” as Germany observes Holocaust Memorial Day. In a pre-recorded speech marking the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Scholz called for a united front against racism and anti-Semitism.

Scholz welcomed recent protests across Germany against the far right, emphasizing the need to confront and counteract the rise of neo-Nazism and right-wing populism. The Chancellor acknowledged that reports about far-right figures engaging in discussions on mass deportations had sparked national discussions about potentially banning far-right political parties.

During his address, Scholz emphasized that the current developments were not to be passively accepted. He urged Germans to actively stand up against the far right and safeguard the principles of democracy. Notably, millions of citizens have been taking to the streets in support of democracy, respect, and humanity, reflecting a collective rejection of extremist ideologies.

Scholz also commended a landmark ruling to cut funding to the radical right-wing party, Die Heimat. The Chancellor’s remarks underscore the gravity of the situation and the commitment required to counteract the resurgence of far-right ideologies, protecting the democratic foundations of Germany.
