Imran Khan Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence for Alleged State Secrets Leak

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of leaking state secrets, as revealed by his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in a statement on Tuesday. The closed-court hearing, conducted under the Official Secrets Act at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, took place where Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi are already serving sentences on corruption convictions.

Both Khan and Qureshi, sentenced to 10 years each in the “cypher case,” are said to have faced a trial without media or public access, according to PTI. The party’s legal team intends to challenge the decision in a higher court, aiming to suspend the sentences.

Following the sentencing, an explosion in Pakistan’s Balochistan province claimed at least three lives and left seven injured. The blast occurred after a rally by PTI’s national assembly candidate, Saddam Tareen. Tareen remained unharmed, but the incident prompted an emergency declaration by hospitals in Sibi and Quetta.

Imran Khan responded to the 10-year prison sentence, describing it as “a fixed match whose outcome was predetermined.” His statement, shared on his account on X, called on supporters to participate actively in the upcoming general elections.

This sentencing marks the latest episode in a series of legal challenges faced by Khan and comes just ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for February 8, a contest the ousted former leader is unable to participate in due to his prior conviction. The allegations in the “cypher case” revolve around Khan’s supposed involvement in leaking an encrypted diplomatic cable in March 2022, a charge based on a meeting with a US State Department official.
