Kenya Court Blocks Deployment of Police Officers to Haiti, Deems It Unconstitutional

A Kenyan judge has issued a ruling preventing the deployment of 1,000 Kenyan police officers to Haiti as part of a UN-backed multinational force aimed at restoring security in the Caribbean nation.

High Court judge Chacha Mwita declared that President William Ruto and the National Security Council lack the authority, under Kenyan law, to send police officers to Haiti or any other country.

The deployment, financed by the United States, was slated to address gang violence in Haiti and had received approvals from Kenya’s cabinet and parliament. However, a legal challenge led by Kenyan politician Ekuru Aukot argued that the deployment was unconstitutional.

The high court ruling sided with Aukot, deeming the planned deployment “unconstitutional, illegal, and invalid.” The decision poses a potential setback for Kenya’s involvement in the UN-backed peacekeeping mission in Haiti.

“Every passing day that this long-awaited support has not yet arrived is one day too many,” he added.
