Kremlin Dismisses U.S. Warning on Russian Space-Based Nuclear Capabilities as ‘Malicious Fabrication

Russia has firmly rejected recent warnings from the United States regarding new Russian nuclear capabilities in space, dismissing the claims as a “malicious fabrication” and a ploy by the White House to secure additional funds from U.S. lawmakers to counter Moscow.

The United States had reportedly briefed Congress and European allies about new intelligence related to Russian attempts to develop a space-based weapon, emphasizing that these capabilities did not present an immediate threat to the United States. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that he would refrain from commenting on the substance of the reports until details were officially disclosed by the White House.

Peskov asserted that the U.S. warning was evidently an attempt to influence Congress to approve additional funding, stating, “It is obvious that the White House is trying, by hook or by crook, to encourage Congress to vote on a bill to allocate money, this is obvious.” He added, “We’ll see what tricks the White House will use.”

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, Moscow’s point man on arms control, went further, accusing the United States of engaging in a “malicious fabrication.” The tense situation follows Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leading to heightened tensions between Moscow and the West, reminiscent of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Both sides have warned of the potential for conflict between NATO and Russia.
