South African Innovator Neo Hutiri Wins Prestigious Engineering Prize for Smart Medicine-Dispensing Lockers

South African entrepreneur Neo Hutiri has been awarded a major engineering prize for his innovative Pelebox system—a network of internet-enabled lockers designed to dispense medication for chronic conditions. The smart locker system improves healthcare access, reduces queues, and alleviates pressure on hospital resources.

Hutiri received £50,000 ($63,000) and a medal from the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering. The award ceremony, marking the 10th anniversary of the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, celebrated entrepreneurs who have developed technology to address local challenges in Africa, ranging from power access to climate change adaptation.

The competition, dedicated to alumni of the training program, shortlisted 12 innovations from six countries, with Hutiri emerging as the winner during the special edition event in London. The regular Africa Prize competition is scheduled for June, where four finalists will compete for a £25,000 ($31,600) prize.
