Suspect in Boston Nurse Murder Case Re-Arrested in Kenya after Daring Escape

Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’Ethe, the man accused of murdering his girlfriend in Boston and later fleeing to Kenya, has been re-arrested following his dramatic escape from a Nairobi police station nearly a week ago. The 42-year-old was apprehended at a relative’s house in Ngong, a suburb of Nairobi, based on a tip-off.

Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei confirmed Kang’Ethe’s arrest, stating that he is now held in a different police station, ensuring his custody. The extradition process to the United States, where he faces murder charges, will continue.

Kang’Ethe boarded a plane to Kenya shortly after the alleged murder of Margaret “Maggie” Mbitu on November 1, 2023. Mbitu’s body was discovered in Kang’Ethe’s SUV at Boston Logan International Airport, two days after she was reported missing.

The suspect’s escape from the heavily guarded Nairobi police station last Wednesday was termed “unfortunate” by Bungei, attributing it to “unethical conduct.” According to a police report, Kang’Ethe escaped while alone in an office after a man claiming to be his lawyer appeared at the station and officers released him from his cell.

Kang’Ethe had been arrested outside a Nairobi nightclub on January 30. Following a US extradition request, Kenyan authorities initiated the formal process to return him to Boston to face the murder charges.
