The Taliban has released 84-year-old Austrian far-right activist, Herbert Fritz, who was apprehended in Afghanistan last May. The Austrian government confirmed Fritz’s arrival in Doha after successful mediation by the Qatari government.

Fritz’s arrest last year came after he reportedly portrayed a positive image of life in Afghanistan, contributing to anti-immigration arguments suggesting the country was safe for refugees. The Taliban detained him on suspicion of spying, as reported by Austria’s Der Standard newspaper.

The Austrian foreign ministry expressed its ongoing efforts since May to secure Fritz’s release, extending thanks to Qatar and the European Union representation in Kabul for their assistance.

Fritz, a founding member of Austria’s National Democratic Party (NDP), faced a ban in 1988. The far-right Freedom Party in Austria, currently leading in polls ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections, advocated for Fritz’s release, asserting he was researching a book in Afghanistan.

Qatar’s foreign ministry conveyed gratitude to the Taliban administration for its cooperation in releasing the Austrian activist.
