U.S. Blocks UN Ceasefire Resolution in Israel-Hamas Conflict

United States exercised its veto power for the third time, blocking a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The draft resolution, put forward by Algeria, received support from thirteen council members, with Britain choosing to abstain.

Algeria’s U.N. Ambassador, Amar Bendjama, emphasized that supporting the resolution meant endorsing the Palestinians’ right to life, while a vote against implied support for the violence inflicted upon them.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Linda Thomas-Greenfield, signaled concerns over potential complications in ongoing talks involving the U.S., Egypt, Israel, and Qatar. These discussions aim to broker a temporary ceasefire and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

Thomas-Greenfield asserted that demanding an immediate, unconditional ceasefire without addressing the release of hostages might hinder the path to a lasting peace. The move continues to draw attention and debate on the international stage as the conflict persists.
