ASUU Strike Hits Kano University, Commences Two-Week Warning Strike Over Poor Funding - Jahjioke - 05-31-2024

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yusuf Maitama Sule University in Kano has started a two-week warning strike. This decision follows ongoing complaints about insufficient funding for the institution.
As reported by Legit.ng, in a statement by ASUU leaders, Mansur Sa'id (Chairperson) and Yusuf Gwarzo (Secretary), the union expressed frustration over the state government's lack of response to their attempts to negotiate and address the funding issues. Despite repeated efforts, the government has not engaged in any meaningful dialogue with the union.
ASUU previously raised concerns about the university's poor funding in November. The union criticized the state government for spending billions of naira on scholarships for students studying abroad while neglecting local institutions like Yusuf Maitama Sule University.
The decision to strike was made during an ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, May 29. The union emphasized three main demands: improving staff working conditions, ensuring adequate funding, and safeguarding the university's autonomy and academic freedom.
This strike is a significant move by ASUU to draw attention to the pressing issues facing the university and to push for the necessary changes from the state government.
