Government Urges Labour Leaders to Negotiate as Nationwide Strike Looms - Ali - 06-03-2024 In response to the ongoing strike by organized labor, the Federal Government has invited leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for negotiations through the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission. However, it is unclear whether the labor leaders will attend the meeting. Several unions have shut down operations in compliance with the NLC and TUC's directive to start an indefinite nationwide strike. On Friday, organized labor announced the strike due to the Federal Government's refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000. According to NLC President Joe Ajaero, the strike will begin at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024. In a joint statement, Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo expressed serious concerns and disappointment over the government's failure to finalize and pass a new National Minimum Wage Act. They also demanded the government reverse the electricity tariff increase to N65/kWh.
