Enugu Magistrate Court Remands Igga Monarch and Former Councillor for Alleged Murder by Ali: 06-06-2024, 09:22 PM |
On Thursday, an Enugu Magistrate Court ordered the remand of Igwe Herbert Ukuta, the traditional ruler of the Igga community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, and a former community councillor for alleged murder and involvement in a terrorist group.
The monarch, who had been detained for over a month at the state criminal investigation department, was arraigned alongside four others by the Enugu State Police Command. They faced a 10-count charge before Enugu North Magistrate Court 1. In case No. MEN/320c/2024, involving the Commissioner of Police (Kanayo Uzuegbu) and Igwe Herbert Ukuta (62); Festus Okonkwo (62); Ofadile Titus Henry (39); Sunday Ugwu (26); and Obinna Ayogu (54), the community leaders were accused of conspiracy, being members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its security wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), murdering five people, including two policemen, and being part of a terrorist group. The police stated that the alleged offences are contrary to Section 26(1) and punishable under Section 25(3) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and Section 516(A) of the Criminal Code Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. |
