United Airlines Adjusts Growth Plans, Shifts Focus to Boeing MAX 9 and Airbus A321

United Airlines is adapting its growth strategy in light of delays and uncertainties surrounding the Boeing 737 MAX 10. Chief Financial Officer Mike Leskinen stated on Tuesday that the airline will place greater emphasis on the Boeing 737 MAX 9 and Airbus A321 aircraft to fulfill its growth objectives.

The recent mid-air emergency involving an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 has added to the uncertainties surrounding the certification of the MAX 10, which is already facing delays. Although United has not canceled its order for 277 MAX 10 jets with options for an additional 200, these aircraft have been excluded from the airline’s internal plans.

United’s “United Next” plan aimed at growing domestic capacity by nearly 30% by 2026 is now being adjusted. Leskinen highlighted that without the MAX 10, the airline won’t be able to grow as rapidly.

The shift in focus will lead to a more prominent role for the Boeing 737 MAX 9 and Airbus A321, with specific details yet to be determined based on pricing considerations.
