Zelensky Accuses Moscow of Endangering Lives in Downed Plane Incident

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sharply criticized Moscow, accusing it of risking lives and playing with the fate of Ukrainian prisoners after a deadly plane crash in the Belgorod region near Ukraine’s border. The incident involved an Il-76 plane, which Russia claimed was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war for a planned exchange.

Zelensky called for an international inquiry into the crash and emphasized the need to establish clear facts surrounding the tragic event. He expressed concern that the lives of Ukrainian prisoners were being manipulated for political purposes, adding that it was evident that “the Russians are playing with the lives of Ukrainian prisoners, with the feelings of their relatives, and with the emotions of our society.”

While Russia insisted that there were no survivors, Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR) indicated that it had not received information to ensure safe airspace, as was customary in previous situations. The GUR refrained from confirming responsibility for downing the plane but raised the possibility of “planned and deliberate actions by Russia.”

As tensions escalate in the aftermath of the crash, President Zelensky’s call for an international inquiry underscores the gravity of the situation and the imperative to uncover the truth behind the tragic incident involving the downed military transport plane.
