Simon Ekpa Must Be Arrested By All Means - CDS Christopher Musa
Posted by: The pwince - 06-13-2024, 07:30 AM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

During an interview with Channels TV Nigeria, Chief of Defense Staff General Christopher Musa called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Simon Ekpa, a prominent separatist leader. General Musa accused the Finnish government of supporting Ekpa, which he claims is contributing to unrest and violence in Nigeria.

"Simon Ekpa must be arrested by all means and prosecuted to the full extent of the law," General Musa asserted during the live interview. "His actions have led to significant instability in our country, and it is imperative that he is brought to justice."

General Musa highlighted that Ekpa's activities have significantly contributed to the recent surge in violence in southeastern Nigeria. He stressed that Ekpa's separatist rhetoric and calls for civil disobedience have exacerbated tensions and undermined government efforts to maintain peace and security.

Did India really beat Nigeria 99-1 in a football match?
Posted by: realeunice247 - 06-07-2024, 08:02 AM - Forum: Sports - Replies (1)

In one way or the other, a lot of Nigerians have heard about the legendary football match, the one between Nigeria and India where the latter allegedly beat Nigeria 99 to 1. That is India – 99, Nigeria – 1. Legend has it that before Nigeria scored its only goal, the balls were turning into different creatures (fire, lion, stone) preventing the Nigerian team from kicking them. Samuel Okwaraji, who later risked his life to score a goal for his country, lost his life in the process. Consequently, FIFA banned India from soccer. Although there are variations of the story, the central meaning remains intact.

This story has thrived for so long and for some reasons many people seem to have accepted it as true.

Nonetheless, gistusmore sought to research the topic and lay out the facts. We analysed the story and picked out the claims:

The Nigeria and India Match happened.?

FIFA banned India from the World Cup Tournament.?

Samuel Okparaji died after scoring a goal during the game.?

Was there ever a match like this?

A Keyword search revealed some articles suggesting that the match never happened. Also, we couldn’t find any footage of the event.

Was India banned by FIFA?

Recall that the story claims that FIFA – The Federation of International Football Association – placed a ban on India for displaying magic during the supposed match. While many still have doubts about the veracity of this claim, what seems to still validate it is the fact that India has been absent from the World Cup Tournament for a very long time.

But why has India been off the radar? Our findings show that since the first World Cup Tournament was held in Uruguay 1930, India only qualified for the World Cup Tournament once – 1950. And this was because, with the only slots available from Asia, Philippines, Indonesia and Burma who also got the invites withdrew before the qualification round, leading to India automatically earning a spot. After a while, India also backed out and this exit has been a subject of controversy.

While some have said it was because FIFA has refused India to contest barefooted, others believed that the nation couldn’t afford to take its team to Brazil where the I950 Cup was hosted. However, The Sun attributed the exit to expensive travel costs and valuing the Olympics over the World Cup. Similarly, according to an India Times publication, Sailen Manna who would have led India in the tournament, said that the AIFF – All India Football Federation – did not take the World Cup as seriously as the Olympics.

In 2014 during an interview with Indian Express, 88-year-old Ahmed Khan, the only surviving member of the 1950 Indian team stressed that “Had India participated in the 1950 World Cup, it would have had a positive impact on the development of football in the country. Playing against world-class footballers would have motivated us to improve our standards, which would have paved the way for younger players to emulate players of my era.”

In contradiction to the claim that India’s absence from the World’s Tournament scene was due to the acclaimed Nigeria vs India game and the alleged ban by FIFA, we found out that India had its chance once but did not take it and now, 70 years later, India is yet to play in the World Cup tournament.

How did Samuel Okparaji truly die?

A keyword search led to an August 12th, 2020 article by Nairaland suggesting that it’s been 31years since Samuel Okparaji died. Interestingly, a comment on the post linked the death to the Nigeria and India game as it sought for the veracity of the story. The article asked if the match truly happened or it was just a folklore. This further attests to the virality of the story and how much the name, Samuel Okwaraji triggers the ageless football story.

We have strived to get the raw fact about the whole story and myths told by our legends

Put down a comment let's know how you were told the story

Ban on LPG Export Leads to Significant Drop in Cooking Gas Prices
Posted by: Ali - 06-06-2024, 09:39 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

Cooking gas dealers, represented by the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, revealed on Wednesday that the Federal Government's ban on the export of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, commonly known as cooking gas, has caused a substantial decrease in its cost. Prices have plummeted from approximately N1,500 per kilogram to around N900/kg.

During a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, in Abuja, the dealers highlighted the impact of the export ban on the LPG market.

The ban, implemented on February 22, 2024, aimed to boost domestic supply and consequently lower prices. This measure was taken in response to the surge in cooking gas prices.

As reported by The PUNCH, LPG producers and industry stakeholders were instructed to cease exporting the commodity from Nigeria to address the soaring costs.

Finance Minister to Present Minimum Wage Template to Tinubu Today
Posted by: Ali - 06-06-2024, 09:37 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

Negotiations between the Federal Government and Organised Labour regarding the minimum wage were adjourned on Wednesday, with discussions set to resume today. The Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage deferred the session in anticipation of Finance Minister Wale Edun submitting the salary template to President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu had instructed the finance minister during a meeting on Tuesday to provide the cost implications for a new minimum wage within a two-day timeframe. This directive was issued during discussions with the government negotiation team led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the presidential villa in Abuja.

Sources within the labour unions, privy to the committee meeting, indicated that further negotiations were put on hold pending the outcome of the presidential template.

An attendee at the meeting stated, “The meeting has been adjourned until Thursday. We showed understanding because we all know that the president gave the minister of finance 48 hours to come up with a minimum wage. So, we decided to give them the time. We will be meeting by 2 p.m.”

A senior labour official, representing labour on the tripartite committee, emphasized the importance of the template in the minimum wage negotiation process.

Federal Government Inaugurates Gas Gathering Facility in Kwale, Delta State
Posted by: Ali - 06-06-2024, 09:34 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

After more than six decades of gas flaring from oil fields, the Federal Government took a significant step on Thursday by commissioning the 300 million standard cubic feet gas gathering facility in Kwale, Delta State.

Constructed by Nedogas Development Company Limited in collaboration with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, the gas gathering hub was inaugurated by the Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperipe Ekpo.

The initiative arose from the stranded nature of associated gas resources in the OML 56 producer, where there was previously no evacuation pipeline to connect gas resources to the Nigerian gas pipeline network for monetization.

Materials provided at the event highlighted the project's objective of eliminating gas flaring and converting environmental pollutants into valuable products.

The facility is projected to contribute approximately $240 million annually to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product within the initial four years through trunk line tariffs, sales of liquid products to off-takers, and other infrastructural tariffs.

Furthermore, it will serve as a convenient location for gas producers in the cluster to deliver their gas resources via pipeline connections, with distances ranging from 3km at Ebendo to 21km at Matsogo.

Afreximbank Announces $925M Additional Funding for NNPC Crude Oil-Backed Facility
Posted by: Ali - 06-06-2024, 09:33 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

On Thursday, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) announced an additional disbursement of $925 million under the syndicated $3.3 billion crude oil-backed prepayment facility sponsored by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

This latest disbursement for Project Gazelle Funding Limited raises the total current funded facility size to $3.175 billion.

Arranged and coordinated by Afreximbank, the accordion arrangement secured $925 million from a consortium of crude oil off-taker lenders, including the Oando Group and Sahara Energy Resource Limited.

In a statement posted on its website, the bank noted, “Afreximbank acted as Mandated Lead Arranger, Technical and Modelling Bank, Bookrunner, Facility Agent, Offshore Account Bank, Intercreditor Agent, and Collateral Agent for the transaction. This facility is expected to support Nigeria’s macroeconomic stability, long-term economic growth, and enhance the country’s industrialization and trade development efforts.”

This announcement follows the success of the first accordion tranche of the $3.3 billion facility. In December 2023, the project received funded commitments totaling $2.25 billion.
