Strange World: Nsukka Family Struck with Blindness and Withered Limbs by Ali: 06-01-2024, 04:55 PM
The inexplicable nature of life and existence continues to stun humanity. Recently, in the university town of Nsukka, Enugu State, a heartbreaking story unfolded, revealing life's unpredictability. This tale revolves around the family of 75-year-old Edwin Eze from Umabor village, Eha-Alumona community, Nsukka Local Government Area.

The family's mysterious illness is devastating. Edwin Eze is blind, and three of his sons have withered hands and legs and are also dumb. The enormous responsibility of caring for the family fell to their 60-year-old mother, the only member without a deformity.

However, hope arrived when Prof. Mrs. Victoria Onu, the head of the Special Needs Education Department at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, discovered their plight. Prof. Onu, the first female professor of creativity in Africa, has been supporting the family for the past eight years since she first encountered them.

Prof. Onu recounted, “I didn’t know the family before. I was deeply moved by their unbearable health challenges— a father and three physically challenged sons with impaired eyes, withered hands and legs, and unable to speak, suffering without basic necessities like food and water."

The family lives in a single-room mud house, where they huddle day and night. Their aged mother struggled to feed her blind husband and three adult sons until Prof. Onu intervened. She now provides food, buys medication, and has built a toilet facility for them.

Prof. Onu is inspired by the family's resilience and simplicity in the face of their challenges. She emphasized, "I am excited by the way the family takes life very simply, not minding their challenges, but something urgent needs to be done to give them a sense of belonging.”
